Bruce Lee - Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do

Simply stated, Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is the method of Scientific Street Fighting created by Bruce Lee. JKD is designed to end a confrontation as quickly and efficiently as possible. Sifu Tommy Steele has received extensive authentic training and certification in JKD directly from many of Bruce Lee’s 1st and 2nd generation students, so students at the Institute will receive a complete curriculum in this art.

JKD literally means “Way of the Intercepting Fist” and emphasizes that your opponent’s attack presents an opportunity for you to launch your own attack and end the fight quickly. The foundations of Bruce’s art are Wing Chun kung-fu, Western Boxing and Fencing, but he incorporated aspects of other martial arts where he deemed them effective for street fighting and did not compromise his basic fighting principles.

Importantly, Bruce did not want his students to become copies of himself as each individual has their own set of attributes that makes their fighting experience unique. Techniques that work for a 6′-4″ tall man will often not work for a 5′-6″ tall woman. Bruce encouraged his students to use JKD as launching point for a journey of self-expression and self-discovery. This is the same teaching principle that is followed at Steele’s Institute of Martial Arts.

Wei Kuen Do

Wei Kuen Do (WKD) is a complete system of combat created by Bruce Lee’s good friend and JKD student Grandmaster Leo Fong. GM Leo Fong was a skilled competitive amateur boxer and well-trained in many different forms of martial arts prior to receiving instruction from Bruce. Bruce encouraged Leo to emphasize his extensive boxing skills in his own personal expression of Jeet Kune Do. As a result, Leo’s JKD could simplistically be referred to as “trap-boxing”, where the “trapping hand” techniques of JKD are used to greatly enhance the effectiveness of time-tested boxing tools.

Since Bruce’s death in 1973, GM Leo has continued his journey of self-expression. The result is Wei Kuen Do, which translates to “Art of the Innovative Fist” that has its roots in JKD, Western Boxing and Angel Cabales’ Serrada Escrima but also relies on his mastery of Choy Lay Fut, Sil Lum kung fu, and Wing Chun kung fu.

Jedokan

Jedokan is a martial art system created by Grandmaster Jeff Jeds in July 2000 at the request of his late instructor GM Dr. Guillermo B. Lengson. It is based on GM Jeff’s life-long training and superlative skill in martial arts that include Shotokan Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Kickboxing, Combat Judo, Kung-Fu and Arnis. Jedokan specializes in training its members to be proficient in empty-hand combat and weaponry.

Unlike most martial arts training, Jedokan is not a style, with the specific trademark of a puncher, kicker or a grappler, but rather a system that ensures versatility and adaptability. A key principle of Jedokan is elusiveness through footwork which GM Jeff describes as “the ability to navigate around your opponent without being hit or caught, with the skills to execute any technique at will.”

Jerry Poteet's Jeet Kune Do

The late Jerry Poteet was the 2nd student admitted into Bruce Lee’s Chinatown LA school and was also one of a small group of elite private students who trained with Bruce regularly at his home. Jerry was referred to as the “Keeper of the Flame” after Bruce’s death as he devoted his life to teaching Bruce’s art to the following generations of JKD practitioners.

Sifu Tommy Steele holds instructor certification in Jerry Poteet’s Jeet Kune Do system under Sifu Darryl D’Amico (Ottawa JKD).

Patrick Strong's Deep Level Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do

Deep Level is the creation of Patrick Strong, an original student of Bruce Lee, in his lifelong dedication to unlocking the barriers to increased speed and heightened physical performance. Sifu Patrick Strong was one of Bruce Lee’s first students in Seattle, he attended classes at both the first Jun Fan Gung Fu school in Seattle’s Chinatown and the next one in the University of Washington area. Subsequently he also practiced other martial arts such as Wing Chun with the Grand Master Hawkins Cheung and Jujitsu of which he is an 8th degree black belt. He is a researcher in the disciplines of combat and his students collaborate with him in a sort of experimental laboratory rather than a gym. Starting from the fundamental concepts developed by Bruce Lee, Sifu Strong studies martial arts using physics and biophysics as well as biomechanics and developed in particular the following concepts: non-intentional speed through Wu Wei and Wei Wu Wei (Taoist principles of “effortless action” and “action through inaction”), kinetic energy and elastic power, hit without rebound, and soft and invisible power.

Sifu Tommy Steele holds instructor certification directly from Sifu Patrick Strong in this system.
